World Diabetes Day, November 14: Raising Awareness

As we mark World Diabetes Day on November 14th, it is essential to acknowledge the alarming rise in diabetes cases globally. According to recent statistics, the number of people living with diabetes has skyrocketed from 200 million in 1990 to a staggering 830 million in 2022. Unfortunately, more than half of those affected did not receive proper medication for their condition in 2022. The consequences of unmanaged diabetes are dire, leading to blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, and lower limb amputation. In 2021 alone, diabetes and kidney disease caused by diabetes resulted in over 2 million deaths, with high blood glucose contributing to 11% of cardiovascular deaths.
In Pakistan, the situation is particularly concerning, with 26% of the population affected by diabetes, ranking among the highest in the world. As a responsible healthcare provider, Mukhtaran Rafiq Welfare Hospital is committed to raising awareness about diabetes and providing accessible care to our community.

Symptoms of Diabetes

It is crucial to recognize the early warning signs of diabetes, which may include:
  • Increased thirst and hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow healing of cuts and wounds
  • Tingling or numbness in hands and feet

Prevention and Delaying Onset

While some risk factors, such as family history and age, cannot be changed, there are ways to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes:
  • Maintain a healthy diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Engage in regular physical activity, such as walking or exercise
  • Maintain a normal body weight
  • Avoid tobacco use
